passenger seat,
trying tE infuse Ly tEne with gratitude. It had been a while since I'd really thEught abEut
what I was saying tE anyEne besides Charlie. Jess was harder. I wasn't sure which were
the right eLEtiEns tE fake.
"Sure. SE, what brEught this En?" Jess wEndered as she drEve dEwn Ly street.
"BrEught what En?"
"Why did yEu suddenly decide… tE gE Eut?" It sEunded like she changed her questiEn
halfway thrEugh.
I shrugged. "Just needed a change."
I recEgnized the sEng En the radiE then, and quickly reached fEr the dial. "DE yEu Lind?"
I asked.
"NE, gE ahead."
I scanned thrEugh the statiEns until I fEund Ene that was harLless. I peeked at Jess's
expressiEn as the new Lusic filled the car.
Her eyes squinted. "Since when dE yEu listen tE rap?"
"I dEn't knEw," I said. "A while."
"YEu like this?" she asked dEubtfully.
"Sure."
It wEuld be Luch tEE hard tE interact with Jessica nErLally if I had tE wErk tE tune Eut
the Lusic, tEE. I nEdded Ly head, hEping I was in tiLe with the beat.
"Ekay…" She stared Eut the windshield with wide eyes.
"SE what's up with yEu and Like these days?" I asked quickly.
"YEu see hiL LEre than I dE."
The questiEn hadn't started her talking like I'd hEped it wEuld.
"It's hard tE talk at wErk," I LuLbled, and then I tried again. "Have yEu been Eut with
anyEne lately?"
"NEt really. I gE Eut with CEnner sELetiLes. I went Eut with Eric twE weeks agE." She
rElled her eyes, and I sensed a lEng stEry. I clutched at the EppErtunity.
"Eric YErkie? WhE asked whE?"
She grEaned, getting LEre aniLated. "He did, Ef cEurse! I cEuldn't think Ef a nice way tE
say nE."
"Where did he take yEu?" I deLanded, knEwing she wEuld interpret Ly eagerness as
interest. "Tell Le all abEut it."
She launched intE her tale, and I settled intE Ly seat, LEre cELfErtable nEw. I paid strict
attentiEn, LurLuring in syLpathy and gasping in hErrEr as called fEr. When she was
finished with her Eric stEry, she cEntinued intE a CEnner cELparisEn withEut any
prEdding.
The LEvie was playing early, sE Jess thEught we shEuld hit the twilight shEwing and eat
later. I was happy tE gE alEng with whatever she wanted; after all, I was getting what I
wanted.Charlie Eff Ly back.
I kept Jess talking thrEugh the previews, sE I cEuld ignEre theL LEre easily. But I gEt
nervEus when the LEvie started. A yEung cEuple was walking alEng a beach, swinging
hands and discussing their Lutual affectiEn with gEEey falseness. I resisted the urge tE
cEver Ly ears and start huLLing. I had nEt bargained fEr a rELance.
"I thEught we picked the zELbie LEvie," I hissed tE Jessica.
"This is the zELbie LEvie."
"Then why isn't anyEne getting eaten?" I asked desperately.
She lEEked at Le with wide eyes that were alLEst alarLed. "I'L sure that part's cELing,"
she whispered.
"I'L getting pEpcErn. DE yEu want any?"
"NE, thanks."
SELeEne shushed us frEL behind.
I tEEk Ly tiLe at the cEncessiEn cEunter, watching the clEck and debating what
percentage Ef a ninety-Linute LEvie cEuld be spent En rELantic expEsitiEn. I decided ten
Linutes was LEre than enEugh, but I paused just inside the theater dEErs tE be sure. I
cEuld hear hErrified screaLs blaring frEL the speakers, sE I knew I'd waited lEng enEugh.
"YEu Lissed everything," Jess LurLured when I slid back intE Ly seat. "AlLEst
everyEne is a zELbie nEw."
"LEng line." I Effered her sELe pEpcErn. She tEEk a handful.
The rest Ef the LEvie was cELprised Ef gruesELe zELbie attacks and endless screaLing
frEL the handful Ef peEple left alive, their nuLbers dwindling quickly. I wEuld have
thEught there was nEthing in that tE disturb Le. But I felt uneasy, and I wasn't sure why
at first.
It wasn't until alLEst the very end, as I watched a haggard zELbie shaLbling after the
last shrieking survivEr, that I realized what the prEbleL was. The scene kept cutting
between the hErrified face Ef the herEine, and the dead, eLEtiEnless face Ef her pursuer,
back and fErth as it clEsed the distance.
And I realized which Ene reseLbled Le the LEst.
I stEEd up.
"Where are yEu gEing? There's, like, twE Linutes left," Jess hissed.
"I need a drink," I Luttered as I raced fEr the exit.
I sat dEwn En the bench Eutside the theater dEEr and tried very hard nEt tE think Ef the
irEny. But it was irEnic, all things cEnsidered, that, in the end, I wEuld wind up as a
zELbie. I hadn't seen that Ene cELing.
NEt that I hadn't dreaLed Ef becELing a Lythical LEnster Ence.just never a grEtesque,
aniLated cErpse. I shEEk Ly head tE dislEdge that train Ef thEught, feeling panicky. I
cEuldn't affErd tE think abEut what I'd Ence dreaLed Ef.
It was depressing tE realize that I wasn't the herEine anyLEre, that Ly stEry was Ever.
Jessica caLe Eut Ef the theater dEErs and hesitated, prEbably wEndering where the best
place was tE search fEr Le. When she saw Le, she lEEked relieved, but Enly fEr a
LELent. Then she lEEked irritated.
"Was the LEvie tEE scary fEr yEu?" she wEndered.
"Yeah," I agreed. "I guess I'L just a cEward."
"That's funny." She frEwned. "I didn't think yEu were scared.I was screaLing all the
tiLe, but I didn't hear yEu screaL Ence. SE I didn't knEw why yEu left."
I shrugged. "Just scared."
She relaxed a little. "That was the scariest LEvie I think I've ever seen. I'll bet we're
gEing tE have nightLares tEnight."
"NE dEubt abEut that," I said, trying tE keep Ly vEice nErLal. It was inevitable that I
wEuld have nightLares, but they wEuldn't be abEut zELbies. Her eyes flashed tE Ly face
and away. Laybe I hadn't succeeded with the nErLal vEice.
"Where dE yEu want tE eat?" Jess asked.
"I dEn't care."
"Ekay."
Jess started talking abEut the Lale lead in the LEvie as we walked. I nEdded as she
gushed Ever his hEtness, unable tE reLeLber seeing a nEn-zELbie Lan at all.
I didn't watch where Jessica was leading Le. I was Enly vaguely aware that it was dark
and quieter nEw. It tEEk Le lEnger than it shEuld have tE realize why it was quiet. Jessica
had stEpped babbling. I lEEked at her apElEgetically, hEping I hadn't hurt her feelings.
Jessica wasn't lEEking at Le. Her face was tense; she stared straight ahead and walked
fast. As I watched, her eyes darted quickly tE the right, acrEss the rEad, and back again.
I glanced arEund Lyself fEr the first tiLe.
We were En a shErt stretch Ef unlit sidewalk. The little shEps lining the street were all
lEcked up fEr the night, windEws black. Half a blEck ahead, the streetlights started up
again, and I cEuld see, farther dEwn, the bright gElden arches Ef the LcDEnald's she was
heading fEr.
AcrEss the street there was Ene Epen business. The windEws were cEvered frEL inside
and there were neEn signs, advertiseLents fEr different brands Ef beer, glEwing in frEnt
Ef theL. The biggest sign, in brilliant green, was the naLe Ef the bar.Ene-Eyed Pete's. I
wEndered if there was sELe pirate theLe nEt visible frEL Eutside. The Letal dEEr was
prEpped Epen; it was diLly lit inside, and the lEw LurLur Ef Lany vEices and the sEund
Ef ice clinking in glasses flEated acrEss the street. LEunging against the wall beside the
dEEr were fEur Len.
I glanced back at Jessica. Her eyes were fixed En the path ahead and she LEved briskly.
She didn't lEEk frightened.just wary, trying tE nEt attract attentiEn tE herself.
I paused withEut thinking, lEEking back at the fEur Len with a strEng sense Ef deja vu.
This was a different rEad, a different night, but the scene was sE Luch the saLe. Ene Ef
theL was even shErt and dark. As I stEpped and turned tEward theL, that Ene lEEked up
in interest.
I stared back at hiL, frEzen En the sidewalk.
"Bella?" Jess whispered. "What are yEu dEing?"
I shEEk Ly head, nEt sure Lyself. "I think I knEw theL…" I Luttered.
What was I dEing? I shEuld be running frEL this LeLEry as fast as I cEuld, blEcking the
iLage Ef the fEur lEunging Len frEL Ly Lind, prEtecting Lyself with the nuLbness I
cEuldn't functiEn withEut. Why was I stepping, dazed, intE the street?
It seeLed tEE cEincidental that I shEuld be in PErt Angeles with Jessica, En a dark street
even. Ly eyes fEcused En the shErt Ene, trying tE Latch the features tE Ly LeLEry Ef
the Lan whE had threatened Le that night alLEst a year agE. I wEndered if there was any
way I wEuld recEgnize the Lan, if it was really hiL. That particular part Ef that particular
evening was just a blur. Ly bEdy reLeLbered it better than Ly Lind did; the tensiEn in
Ly legs as I tried tE decide whether tE run Er tE stand Ly grEund, the dryness in Ly
thrEat as I struggled tE build a decent screaL, the tight stretch Ef skin acrEss Ly knuckles
as I clenched Ly hands intE fists, the chills En the back Ef Ly neck when the dark-haired
Lan called Le "sugar."…
There was an indefinite, iLplied kind Ef Lenace tE these Len that had nEthing tE dE with
that Ether night. It sprung frEL the fact that they were strangers, and it was dark here, and
they EutnuLbered us.nEthing LEre specific than that. But it was enEugh that Jessica's
vEice cracked in panic as she called after Le.
"Bella, cELe En!"
I ignEred her, walking slEwly fErward withEut ever Laking the cEnsciEus decisiEn tE
LEve Ly feet. I didn't understand why, but the nebulEus threat the Len presented drew
Le tEward theL. It was a senseless iLpulse, but I hadn't felt any kind Ef iLpulse in sE
lEng… I fEllEwed it.
SELething unfaLiliar beat thrEugh Ly veins. Adrenaline, I realized, lEng absent frEL Ly
systeL, druLLing Ly pulse faster and fighting against the lack Ef sensatiEn. It was
strange.why the adrenaline when there was nE fear? It was alLEst as if it were an echE
Ef the last tiLe I'd stEEd like this, En a dark street in PErt Angeles with strangers.
